CHU Campus & History
Colorado Heights University sits on 76 acres at the highest point in Denver. The beautiful and historic campus has a rich history that began in the late 1800s when Mother Pancratia, of the Sisters of Loretto, had the vision to educate the women of the West.
Loretto Heights Academy was founded in 1896 as a Catholic girl’s high school in the building that is still considered the centerpiece of the campus, now used as the university’s Administration Building. The Romanesque six-story structure, designed by Denver’s premier architect, Frank E. Edbrooke, was built from red sandstone and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Over the years the school became a college and expanded to include teacher education programs, nursing programs, business, dance and more for both men and women. Now Colorado Heights University specializes in International Business and English courses and is owned by the Teikyo University Group based in Japan. They operate many undergraduate and graduate universities with more than 50,000 students spread out among 46 campuses across the globe.
The CHU campus has come a long way from its start as a Catholic girls’ high school housed in only one building. There are now roughly ten structures that include a 1,000-seat theater, an interfaith chapel, a swimming pool, cafeteria, and a residence hall. The CHU campus facilities and location provide an excellent environment for university studies and student life.
